Comfort Food, Cold Beer, and Small-Town Charm

I Love to Eat — and Explore Hidden Food Gems

I love to eat!! But more than that, I love trying new places—especially diners, restaurants, and bakeries tucked away in small rural towns. You know the kind: from the outside, they look like they might land you in a three-day, stomach-hugging-the-toilet situation, but once you step inside, you’re met with the warmest, most welcoming environment and some of the best food around.

I usually stick to my go-tos, like a classic clubhouse sandwich with fries and gravy, or a plate of loaded nachos or a healthy salad, cause I know there’s a yummy dessert at the end.

But I always start with, “What would you recommend off your menu?” I ask the server. I like to hear their suggestions. If something sounds appealing, I’ll go for it. If not, back to my classics. My husband, on the other hand, always enjoys trying the local beer if they have one.

Road Trip Eats: A Small-Town Bistro Adventure

“Let’s head east—there’s a small bistro I’ve recently heard about. We should check it out.”
My husband is always up for spontaneous road trips and adventures, and I love him for that! We let the boys know we’re heading out, where we’ll be, and then hop into the Jeep. Along the way, we often take detours through towns we haven’t explored before.

We arrived at the bistro within an hour, and I turned to him and said, “I’m looking forward to this. I’ve heard good things.” The weather was beautiful, so we chose to sit out on the patio and enjoy the small-town charm.

Our Bistro Experience

The waitress brought menus and water and asked for our drink orders. My husband ordered the Snake Lake Kinabik beer—he said it was good, though he wished he’d tried a different flavour. I went with a ginger ale and a lemon wedge.

For an appetizer, we shared the Fried Calamari ($13). I’m usually picky about seafood, but this was good. It had just the right amount of seasoning, and the calamari wasn’t overcooked—crispy, flavorful, and well done.

Main Course Highlights

My husband ordered the Beef on a Bun with French Onion Soup ($16). He really enjoyed the sandwich, saying it had the perfect amount of beef to satisfy his appetite. The soup, however, was a bit of a letdown—but let’s be honest, my husband is an incredible cook, and his French onion soup is so good that nothing really compares.

I went for the Avocado Vinaigrette Salad with Cajun Chicken ($16.49). The portion felt a little small for the price, but it was delicious. The chicken had the perfect amount of heat, and the vinaigrette paired nicely with the fresh greens.

Takeout for the Boys & Dessert for Us

Before leaving, we grabbed two takeout meals for our boys: a steak sandwich with Caesar salad and a Hawaiian pizza. Both said their meals were really good.

And of course, no restaurant visit is complete without dessert!
My husband ordered the Tuxedo Cake, which he thought was excellent. I chose my all-time favorite: cheesecake with strawberry topping. We enjoyed our desserts later that evening while watching a movie together—pure comfort.

Final Thoughts

We would definitely return to this little bistro. The food was tasty, the atmosphere was welcoming, and it was a perfect little escape from the everyday. These small-town gems never disappoint. Check them out – https://www.thedelburnebistro.com
